Dr. Oz talks about Hypnosis for Weight Loss again.
This week on Wednesday Feb 8th, Dr. Oz will be doing another show on how to lose weight with Hypnosis. He’ll be talking with Paul McKenna again who is a Hypnotist and NLP Practitioner. Yet, in this show they’ll be exploring the hypnosis version of the ‘gastric bypass’ which simulates weight loss surgery using only hypnosis to convince the patient that they have actually had a gastric bypass to lose the weight…read on to hear my thoughts on this procedure.
So, what’s the deal with using Hypnosis to make the client’s subconscious mind ‘think’ they’ve undergone surgery? Is it effective? Does it work as well as traditional Hypnotherapy methods to help a person lose weight? Is there such a thing as a ‘traditional method’?
What is the Hypnosis version of the ‘Gastric Bypass’?
The basic concept is to convince the subconscious mind that the surgery has actually taken place when it didn’t. There are many versions of this out there, but the concept is the same. Often, the practitioners will play a cd with hospital sounds and smells to make the effect more real. They will then suggest that the surgery has taken place and that you’ll now be extremely full after a small amount of food. Is this a good idea? Studies show that caloric restriction fails 95% of the time after more than a year.
To those who have been in the business for more than a few years, the idea of convincing the mind that surgery has occurred is nothing new, but there are some concerns with Hypnosis. The most obvious concern is this. Why would you want to try and convince someone of something that isn’t true? What’s the long term effect of that?
Why would you need to lie to create good health?
If you try to convince yourself of something that you know isn’t true, do you really think it will stick long term? What are the odds of your unconscious overcoming that falsehood at some point? If you’re not sure, ask yourself this, “Do you still believe in Santa Clause?”
The answer is an obvious no. In the long run you are more likely to actually breed distrust for the purveyor of the information and it will become harder to make the changes you desire because your life experience doesn’t match what you’ve been told.
In addition, you actually re-reinforce the belief that weight loss is going to be difficult, that you can’t do it on your own, and that being fit and healthy isn’t within your reach easily without something like surgery.
The fact is, Hypnosis is a powerful tool and will work great for weight loss when done right – but the media will always be drawn to a good story. So let’s face it, fake ‘Hypno Surgery’, even if it works short term and backfires long term is a great story. It may for work some, but I believe there are more effective Hypnosis treatments available.
So what’s the ‘Best Practice’ solution?
After 10 years of working with up to 22 clients a day, teaching at the largest convention for Hypnotists and Hypnotherapists in the world, coaching Hypnotists all over the US, Canada, etc. I have seen some brilliant hypnotists get amazing results for weight loss. With each of them, the technique was NOT the specific that made the difference. A highly skilled hypnotist can get the job done with a variety of techniques. The KEY difference in these highly skilled hypnotists was their ability to customize and adjust the techniques on the fly for the client based on their individual needs and how they respond to each phase of the treatment.
Hypnosis for weight loss works amazingly well when done by a qualified practitioner who understands that 80% of the work is not the technique. 80% of creating lasting weight loss is learning to work with the client’s personality profile and a thorough and deep understanding of how they process information, cope with stress, and view themselves. This information provides the necessary blueprint to help get the client from fat to thin and keep them there.
In my years of experience I have come to believe that good health, healthy eating and exercising habits, and ideal weight are all goals worth pursuing and attaining. When you think about it correctly, it makes sense, and it is easy and enjoyable. Yet, most of us have been programmed by TV and advertising to desire food that is unhealthy and will destroy our health.
My promise to clients has always been that I will never try to convince them of something that isn’t already true. This is the foundation of trust and credibility.
The truth is, when you eat at the right times, the right foods, in the right amounts you feel amazing, your digestion is better, you sleep better, you have more energy, better mental focus, and you actually think happier thoughts.
What throws most of us off track is becoming addicted to man-made concoctions that make us sick and fat. Pretty much anything with enough sugar, fat, and salt mixed into it, what I call the ‘Evil Trifecta’ we’ll eat and keep on eating. But is it because we love it? It may seem so, but the answer is a lot more scientific than that. It’s because it throws our blood sugar off balance. Excessive fat and sugar together is a metabolic disaster waiting to happen. When our blood sugar get’s out of balance, our brains send a signal to our appetite center to eat MORE (in an attempt to re-stabilize blood sugar). This, in turn, causes us to eat more of the same food which causes our blood sugar to get more out of balance, etc. until we spiral out of control.
That’s where hypnosis comes in. Hypnosis can help you lose interest in these deadly foods and start craving healthy foods like fresh whole ripe fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, and lean proteins.
Imagine being able to actually eliminate an un-healthy food from your diet? You already know it’s unhealthy and makes you feel terrible AFTER you eat it. So what if we could program you to experience that feeling BEFORE you eat it? Programming your mind to notice what food feels like after you eat it, but before you put it in your mouth will permanently shift your preferences because the truth is – healthy food feels good and unhealthy food feels bad.
As you lower the fat in your diet your energy level goes up, in direct proportion, assuming you are eating sufficient calories of nutrient dense foods (that already tastes amazing). When your energy levels rise you naturally crave and desire physical activity like a kid again.
Have you ever noticed that children don’t ever need motivation to play? That’s your natural state, so when you remove the sludge from your diet and the mental blocks from simply enjoying a fit and healthy life-style and having fun – you will lose the weight and keep it off…but not because you have to, BECAUSE YOU WANT TO.
A solid Hypnosis program for weight loss will help you to FEEL what food really does to your body in a deep and lasting way. It can program your mind to SEE the actual INGREDIENTS of what your are eating before you eat it. For example, when most people think of chocolate they see it as this entity on it’s own…this magical thing called ‘Chocolate’! What they don’t SEE and FEEL is that chocolate is 80% (on average) butter. That’s why chocolate melts like butter, has to be stored like butter, has the consistency of butter, because it is mostly butter. When their mouth is watering they aren’t imagining eating a huge chunk of butter. They don’t look at a box of See’s candies and see a box of chunks of butter. And how would they feel if, when they thought of eating chocolate, they actually vividly imagined eating that large chunk of butter? Would they still eat it? Probably not.
In our clinic we teach clients how to see & feel things for what they really are, not try and believe something they know isn’t true or doesn’t really exist. This supports them being far more successful long term because what they experience validates what they have been told and reinforces the change over time.
Good health and fitness is not something that we have to lie or coerce ourselves into doing. A comprehensive hypnosis weight loss program can help you change the habits and beliefs that have been getting in the way of you loving eating right and enjoying regular physical exercise naturally, and in a way you can really live with long term.
Use Hypnosis to gain mastery over your mind in a true way and reap the benefits for a life-time.
